Spring Blog Update: Hop into the spring season with Skraptacular

Hi, I am Alice and I am a twelve-year-old Skraptacular intern. I will be the blogger for this site, updating you with email blasts from Michelle (our founder), event recaps and cool projects to come. There will be a weekly blog post every Tuesday from me to you so there are lots to look forward to. Today, I will be doing an April recap.

To start off the month, we had a blooming Springing Affair, which had a wonderful turnout. You can read all about that in our previous post. After the fair we had a few more things going on.

Because there were so many events, I will just fill you in on the major stuff. In Fort Tryon Park, we had our annual rite of spring event on April 5th. We took groups on tours of the heather gardens with The Northeast Heather Society! On April 12th we took a field trip to The Cooper Hewitt International Museum of Design.  As guest artists we inspired attendees to create funky table arrangements. On the 17th we traveled to The Time Warner Center in Columbus circle for an earth day event. As shoppers passed, we created up-cylced crafts to promote environmental awareness and make new connections. On April 26th we did a Jamaica Bay cleanup where we raffled off 2 tickets to the Jack Johnson concert. Finally to close our busy month, we did an arts and crafts workshop in Fort Tryon for their Earth Day Extravaganza on the 27th.

Now May is also coming to a close so I will update you on what we have been doing. All year we have been working with young students at The United Palace Theater informing them about the environment through our classic approach of art projects. Currently we are working on “plarn” making (plastic yarn=”plarn”). Event wise we went to the annual TD 5 boro bike tour to collect and upcycle biker's bibs and bike plates. We had lots of fun and got to speak about our organization.

On the 18th, interns traveled down to the highline for an eco fashion show with our very own models, Kaia and Julie, also interns. We had dresses made from trash by people in the Skraptacular community and worn by our models. We had a huge crowd and lots of pictures were taken. It was a wonderful event. We also have another trashion fashion show on the 31st and another clean up at Rockaway Beach on June 1st. Show up to help the environment and have a chance to win Jack Johnson tickets.

That concludes our first weekly blog! Please check back next week for some more Skraptacular updates!
